Environmental Works Funds Springfield Public Schools
Environmental Education Grant
SPRINGFIELD, MO – Environmental Works, Inc. (EWI) sponsored the Raising the Bar on Environmental Awareness grant through the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. The funds donated will impact 125 seventh grade life science students at Cherokee Middle School who will embark on 3 field trips to explore and learn about environmental issues in Springfield, MO.
Ms. Jackie Hutcherson, Cherokee life science teacher, will take the students to multiple environmental sites including Valley Water Mill educational area, Northwest Sewage Treatment Plant, Fulbright Water Treatment Plant, Franklin Recycling Center and Jordan Valley Storm Water Retention area. Over the course of the 3 educational field trips, students will help assess the water quality of a stream feeding into Springfield’s water supply by performing various tests and chemical analysis. They will also learn how the City of Springfield is working to meet the environmental needs of the local population and how they can be a part of environmental stewardship in the area.
Hutcherson believes the grant will contribute to excellence in the classroom. “Environmental education is essential if we want today’s children to mature into environmentally aware adults. What a better way to empower the students in environmental awareness than to directly expose them to the issues in their own hometown,” Hutcherson said.
