Environmental Management and Consulting in Business
Some Sustainability-Minded Companies
Microsoft
Microsoft recently announced one of the most ambitious environmental plans in today’s corporate world. The company is not only going carbon neutral, but carbon negative by 2030. That means the company will reduce its carbon emissions while actively removing carbon from the atmosphere by planting trees and using direct air capture, which pulls carbon out of the atmosphere. The ultimate goal? To free the atmosphere of all of the carbon the company has emitted since its founding in 1975.
Walmart
Walmart is actively involved in a variety of ambitious environmental management initiatives, the most recent of which was dubbed Project Gigaton. Started in 2017, the project hopes to reduce a full gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions from Walmart’s supply chains by 2030. So, what is a gigaton? Think of it as a billion metric tons – in other words, the equivalent of taking 211 million passenger cars off the road for an entire year.
IKEA
IKEA recently pledged to invest about $220 million in reforestation and forest management, as well as transitioning to a more environmentally minded supply chain and using technologies to remove and store carbon.
